| Keeping cat burglars out of the bird feeder
Dear Dr. Fox: I would like to offer a suggestion to C.B.S. of Salisbury, Md., who had the problem of neighborhood cats hanging around the birdhouses and feeders.Try laying down chicken wire on the ground under them in whatever diameter needed. It's said that cats don't like the feel on their paws; and the birds can still feed off the ground. My birds have learned to be somewhat aware of my cats -- I have eight. Luckily, the cats have outgrown stalking the birds, but I still try not to encourage ground feeders.I used the chicken wire a few years ago when a Carolina wren insisted on nesting on my kitchen window ledge. All seven babies flew off safely, so it must have at least helped. It's worth giving the chicken wire a try; but, truthfully, controlling outside cats is next to impossible.-- S.R.C, Great Falls, Va.Dear S.R.C.: Thanks for the good advice.
Kenya: Aquatic Exercise Could Help You Keep the Doctor Away
Fred Sambu, a physiotherapist, helps a patient to exercise in the hydro pool at Karen Hospital November 6, 2007: The first and most predominant thought that comes to your mind when one mentions a hospital is illness. Usually people go to hospitals either as patients or when they are accompanying patients. But imagine going to hospital for a dip in a hydro pool. Welcome to Karen Hospital in Nairobi. "We allow clients to walk in and use our hydro pool, which is basically exercising in water," said Elizabeth Nyokabi, a physiotherapist at the hospital. So who uses this pool that is heated to body temperature? .

Unions organize to protest anti-strike legislation: 500 protesters rally at Province House
Chanting and taunting premier Rodney MacDonald, about 500 unionized health-care workers and their supporters demanded their right to strike be left alone. "Hey hey, ho ho, Rodney's gotta go," they chanted in a brief march around Province House and numerous times through the rally. Even though both opposition parties have said they will defeat the government's plan to introduce anti-strike legislation for health-care workers, the unions said the government measures are really anti-labour. Union speakers said the issue could one day extend beyond health workers. The upbeat crowd waved union flags and yelled "shame" when talking about the legislation and other perceived injustices. Janet Hazelton, president of the Nova Scotia Nurses Union, said nurses are over-worked and tired. "They're tired of all the work, tired of the overtime, tired of their vacations being cancelled, they're just tired.
U.S. is virtually unscathed by hurricanes; emergency planners worry about apathy
Despite alarming predictions, the U.S. came through a second straight hurricane season virtually unscathed, raising fears among emergency planners that they will be fighting public apathy and overconfidence when they warn people to prepare for next year. Friday marks the official close of the Atlantic season, so unless a storm forms in the next few days, only one hurricane -- and a minor one at that -- will have hit the U.S. during the June-to-November period. Mexico and Central America, however, were struck by a record two top-scale Category 5 storms. The preliminary total for the season: 14 named storms, five of them hurricanes, two of them major. That was less activity than the government predicted before the season started, and stands in stark contrast to 2004 and 2005, when the U.S.
